Executive Team
Our team of professionals offers a strong blend of international and domestic knowledge, experience and contacts based on extensive individual experience in banking, finance and investment.
There are three distinct executive teams within the firm: the Corporate Finance Division, the Wealth Management Division and the Private Equity Division. The Wealth Management Division occupies a separate security regulated team room.
Within the firm, there are currently two executives (Justin Murray and Clare Murray) who work across the three divisions in accordance with strict compliance policies.

Justin
Murray - Managing Director
Justin has 18 years’ investment banking and legal experience. Originally a lawyer with Kensington Swan in Wellington, he then spent 9 ½ years as a banker in London with Rothschild, Bankers Trust and as a Managing Director Principal with Bear Stearns. He founded Murray + Co upon his return to New Zealand in 2004.

Chris Milne - Director (Corporate Finance)
Chris has 20 years’ corporate experience initially with Price Waterhouse in Christchurch and then with Inchcape plc in the UK and Asia. On his return to New Zealand he spent 7 years at Ngai Tahu, including 2 ½ years as Chief Operating Officer of the Ngai Tahu Holdings Group.

Richard Rookes - Director (Private Equity)
Richard has 12 years’ corporate and investment banking experience. He spent 8 years with Citigroup in London in a variety of roles including equity research where he was part of the quantitative research team and credit analysis where he was a member of the global loan portfolio management team.

Clare Murray - Director
Clare has 12 years’ experience in finance and banking including 7½ years as a senior finance lawyer with Clifford Chance in London where she ultimately specialised in advising corporate trustees across a range of innovative debt capital markets transactions in various jurisdictions.

Johnny Cochrane - Director (Wealth Management)
Johnny has 14 years’ corporate experience, initially with the New Zealand Dairy Board in Singapore and then with Lehman Brothers. On his return to New Zealand he spent 6 years at BNZ Private Bank, including 3 years as a Divisional Director – Private Banking and as a member of the BNZ Private Banking Investment Committee. Johnny is designated as an Authorised Financial Advisor (AFA).

Andrew Carswell – Director (Property Advisory)
Andrew joined Murray + Co in August 2011 to lead the property advisory division. Andrew has 18 years experience in investment banking, commercial banking and property advisory. This experience was gained in the UK working for HSBC, Commerzbank and CBRE where Andrew structured and executed a range of real estate transactions.

Penny Land – Corporate Services Manager
Penny joined Murray + Co in August 2011 as Corporate Services Manager. Penny has 17 years investment banking experience. She worked for JP Morgan in Australia and Asia and prior to this worked for Macquarie Bank in Sydney. She has extensive operational, project and business management experience.

Hamish has 12 years corporate and financial industry experience. Formerly a lawyer, he has spent eight years in London as a finance industry professional at leading investment firms and a boutique investment bank, Aladdin Capital.

George graduated from the University of Otago in 2008, obtaining a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Commerce (awarded with distinction). He joined Murray + Co as an Analyst in early 2009.

Jake Sheehan - Analyst (Corporate Finance)
Jake joined Murray + Co in February 2011 after completing his Honours Degree in Finance (1st Class) at the University of Canterbury in 2010. During his studies he received numerous scholarships including a recent CFA Society Scholarship.

Annie Vargis - Executive Assistant
Annie graduated from the University of Canterbury in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts (Mass Communications & Linguistics). She joined Murray + Co in April 2009 providing part-time administrative assistance. She then became a full-time Executive Assistant in August 2010.
